Football. Formula One. Basketball. Whatever else refuses to stay still.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup opens on June 11th with Mexico hosting South Africa at the Estadio Azteca — the first of 104 matches across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It is the first edition to feature 48 teams, expanding the group stage to 12 groups of four. The USA begin their campaign on June 12th at SoFi Stadium against Paraguay. Belgium enter Group F alongside Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand, opening on June 15th. The final is scheduled for July 19th at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Prediction markets have Spain and France essentially tied as tournament favourites at roughly 16% implied probability each. Spain leads most bookmakers at +475, with France having slipped slightly after a 2–1 defeat to Ivory Coast in a friendly on June 4th. England sit third at +650, Brazil fourth at +800, and defending champions Argentina — led by Lionel Messi — at +950. Germany (+1300) are considered a tier below. The bracket, if it goes chalk, sets up a potential Spain vs England final — a rematch of Euro 2024, which nobody wants to simulate twice.
Lionel Messi, 38, and Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, will become the first players in history to appear at six different World Cups — two decades on from their 2006 debuts. Messi arrives as defending champion and sits three goals behind Klose's all-time record of 16. Ronaldo confirmed this will be his last: "Definitely, yes." He has never played in a World Cup final. Portugal face DR Congo on June 17th. A quarter-final path could yet set up the showdown the sport has waited 20 years to see.
All 48 final squads were officially confirmed by FIFA on June 2nd. A record 1,248 players are eligible for 104 matches, of which 891 are competing at a World Cup for the first time. Scotland's Craig Gordon, at 43, is the oldest player in the tournament; Mexico's Gilberto Mora, at 17, the youngest. Lamine Yamal, Endrick, and Jude Bellingham represent the next generation stepping into the spotlight. Robert Lewandowski and Rodrygo both missed out. Guillermo Ochoa, 40, returns for a sixth tournament after first-choice Angel Malagon suffered an Achilles rupture in March — a career arc that would be implausible in fiction.
The English summer transfer window does not officially open until June 15th, but the deals have been arriving in waves for weeks. A Newcastle United player heads to FC Barcelona for £69.3 million. Manchester United and Napoli are closing a £38 million deal. Aston Villa have sold to AS Roma for £21.6 million. Ipswich Town, committed to the full mid-table experience as rapidly as possible, have signed from Ajax, Reims, and Salzburg. The pre-World Cup scramble is expensive, loud, and only tangentially related to what actually happens on the pitch.

Kimi Antonelli delivered a dominant lights-to-flag victory in a chaotic Monaco Grand Prix to claim his fifth win from six races. Verstappen stalled on the front row and retired on the opening lap. Leclerc crashed out when the circuit surface broke up with ten laps remaining. George Russell collected a drive-through for pit lane speeding, failed to serve it, received a second penalty, and finished outside the points. Hamilton finished second. A post-race penalty for Perez handed Fernando Alonso Aston Martin's first point of the season. Monaco methodically selects its chaos. This year it simply committed.
The 2026 regulations mandate a 50/50 split between combustion and electrical energy. Verstappen has been their most vocal critic since February, calling the formula "not racing", "a joke", and "fundamentally flawed." After two retirements due to ERS failures, he said anyone who enjoys the cars "really doesn't know what racing is." He has discussed retiring from F1 at the end of the season. Formula 1 introduced tweaks from Miami onwards. Verstappen described them as "a bit late." He is not wrong.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli won his second race in China, took consecutive victories in Japan, then dominated Monaco. He is 19. His championship lead is 66 points. Mercedes built the strongest machine in the new era and Antonelli has delivered results to match. He said the new lighter design "just feels more alive." He arrived ready. The rest of the grid is still adapting.
Hamilton endured a difficult debut 2025 season at Ferrari, being outscored comprehensively by Leclerc. 2026 has been different. Two consecutive second-place finishes have moved him above Leclerc into second in the championship. He told reporters he is "reminding people who I am." Leclerc retired from Monaco with brake failure, leaving him 15 points adrift. The internal dynamic — two fast drivers in proximity, neither of whom enjoys finishing second — is the season's most compelling subplot.
Round 7 heads to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on June 12–14, a circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency — likely another favourable venue for Mercedes. Austria follows on June 26–28 at the Red Bull Ring, where Verstappen's home crowd will need something to cheer. The British Grand Prix at Silverstone completes a demanding three-race stretch on July 3–5. McLaren, after a disappointing Monaco that Norris called "another reality check", need a circuit that suits a car with promise but inconsistent results.
San Antonio took Game 3 at Madison Square Garden 115–111, ending the Knicks' 13-game postseason winning streak and cutting the series deficit to 2-1. San Antonio led 33–22 after one quarter. The Knicks rallied to lead by seven at halftime thanks to a breathtaking 42-point second quarter. The Spurs out-scored New York by 11 in the second half. Every game in this series has been won by the visiting team. Game 4 is Wednesday.
Victor Wembanyama delivered the best individual performance of this Finals: 32 points on 11-of-18 shooting, eight rebounds, six assists, three blocks and two steals. Twenty-two of those points came at the rim or from the free-throw line. He became the second-youngest player to post a 30-5-5 in the Finals, behind Magic Johnson. Stephon Castle added 23 points including a clutch three-pointer with under two minutes left. De'Aaron Fox's late runner extended the lead to five. The Spurs scored 123.7 points per 100 possessions in the second half.
Midway through the first quarter, Wembanyama placed both hands on Brunson's back and pushed him stumbling hard to the floor. No foul was called. Brunson got up and got in Wembanyama's face. The Frenchman was reportedly smiling. Thibodeau argued from the sideline in real time. Brunson finished with 32 points on 11-of-25 shooting — determined, but not enough. Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns both went quiet offensively, compounding the damage from the no-call.
The last time the New York Knicks won an NBA Championship, the Vietnam War was still being fought. The Spurs rebuilt around Wembanyama faster than anyone outside San Antonio was prepared to admit. Their Western Conference Finals run was a seven-game war against OKC that ended with a block now in Spurs lore. The Knicks swept Cleveland to reach the Finals for the first time since 1999 — the last time these two franchises met here. San Antonio won that series in five. The Knicks won 11 consecutive playoff games getting here. The series is 2-1.
Every game in this Finals has been won by the visiting team. If the pattern holds Wednesday, the series ties 2-2 and the remaining games become genuinely open. The Knicks need Towns and Bridges to show up offensively after quiet outings in Game 3. The Spurs need Wembanyama to stay efficient at the rim and Castle composed under pressure. A Game 7 is being treated, by both cities, as an inevitability rather than a possibility.
